When to be UNreasonable

When to be UNreasonable
Purpostry Primer 10 Video Lesson Free

When we follow our dreams, we’re often told that it’s “unreasonable”. But, it was people being unreasonable that contributed most to progress. Learn more.

“It’s unreasonable.”

Everyone who’s tried to follow their dreams would have heard that…

If we’re trying to do what no one has done before, we’re told “it’s unreasonable”.

If we’re trying to do something different from what most in society are doing, we’re told “it’s unreasonable”.

George Bernard Shaw lends this perspective…

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

When the Wright Brothers wanted to fly, everyone told them it was unreasonable.

When they stopped listening to their father telling them in person, he said publicly, “men will never fly because flying is for angels”.

When Roger Bannister wanted to run the 4 minute mile, it seemed impossible.

Competitive running has been around as long as man.

And yet, until 1954, no one managed to run the mile in under 4 minutes.

Once it had been done, the next person did it 46 days later, and last year alone had been done more than 21 times on record!  In fact, it is now considered the standard for middle distance male athletes!

Lord Sebestian Coe, 4 time middle distance Olympic medalist, 2 time Olympic Gold medallist, and President of the International Association of Athletics Federations, put it best, when he said…

… Bannister ‘made the impossible possible’ by breaking through the ‘psychological barrier’ of the four-minute mile, and ‘allowed mankind to enter a world filled with new possibilities’.

And it’s the same story for flying.

Until 1914, no man had ever flown.

It seemed unreasonable to expect man to fly.  Orville and Wilbur Wright were ridiculed by almost everyone they spoke with, even their own father.

Yet, flight has become an everyday affair.

On the 100th anniversary of manned flight, 2014, an average of 8 million people flew every day!  This number is expected to be over 12.3 million in 2019!

You might ask what the greats like Roger Bannister, or the Wright brothers have to do with “ordinary” people like us.

As an aside, I believe we’re all extraordinary individuals and we all have something to add to the world when we follow our dreams.

But back to the point.

It was the same for a fairly ordinary “corporate career person” like me, when I decided to chase my dreams.

It was completely unreasonable for a lawyer of 20 years, to become an online marketer.

Besides the obvious of having worked so hard to get where I was, there were assumptions like…

… Tim, you’re too old

… Tim, you’re not a technology person

… Tim, you’re overwieght

… Tim, you’re not good looking enough

… Tim, you’re Asian

Back then, there were hardly any, Asian, middle aged, overweight individuals who were successful online.

And having to replace a fairly large, corporate lawyer’s income made that seem even more unreasonable.

So it’s not surprising that nearly everyone I knew tried to talk me out of it.

I put my mind to it, perhaps unreasonably, made a good go of it, and replaced my corporate lawyer’s income.

Now, many other corporate professionals have also successfully done the same.  Many other middle aged, not tech savvy, Asian, overweight individuals too.

It can be done.

We owe it to the world to do it.

So remember – unreasonably follow your dreams!
