Your “Why”-Achieve All Goals Today
Knowing your “why” is the Secret to Achieving Whatever You Want in Life – your “why” gives you strength and tenacity
A student of ours recently sent me this wonderful anecdote that really speaks volumes about having the mindset that never gives up, and just finds solutions.
An old farmer wrote a letter to his son in prison.
Dear Son, this year mum and I will not be planting potatoes because we can no longer handle the digging in the field. We know that you love us, and would have helped us if you were here.”
Feeling the love of his parents, the son could not let himself just give up. And so he replied “Dear Dad, please don’t breathe a word of this to anyone, but don’t dig up that field because that’s where I buried the money that I stole.”
As you know, the prisons screen mail. So, the first thing the next the morning, 7 police officers went to his parents’ farm and dug up the whole field searching for the money referred to in the letter, but not surprisingly, nothing was found.
The next day the son wrote his father again, saying, “Dear Dad, you can now plant your potatoes. Sorry I can’t help more, but this is the best I can do from here.”
What a spirit! This young man truly embodies the key success principle of entrepreneurs – not giving up until they find a way to do what needs to be done. Although, I hope that’s not what landed him in prison in the first place!
The obvious moral of the story is that obstacles cannot stand in the way of a highly determined individual. But there is one more take away from this that I think is worth sharing. In an earlier post, we spoke about those nearest and dearest to us asking us to give up. Link to the post is here.
In this case, not only did that not happen, but the father expressed a belief in the goodness of his son – “… We know you love us, and would have helped us…”
The son being in prison, would not have had loving words spoken to him, and would have craved the feeling of being loved and needed. Both of these factors would have driven him to do what it took to achieve the outcome that he needed to achieve.
That’s the power of love and the power of knowing your “why”. German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche said, “He who has a why can endure any how.” In other words, knowing your “why” is first step in achieving your goals.
Knowing your “why” will give you laser like focus to get you ahead, and keep you motivated until you get what you want.
