Does your degree determine your career?
Do you let the degree or qualification that you have limit your choices? Are you miserable doing your job? There is a way out, just open your mind to the possibilities.
Are you doing what you’re doing because you believe that your degree determines your career? That’s one of the most common ‘traps’ that people fall into, that cause them to end up being miserable their whole lives.
Take my example. I was a lawyer for 20 years, partly because I had a law degree. I had fallen into the trap where of allowing “your degree determine your career”. Often that’s the first trip wire. And then once you get into that state of mind of accepting that, and you start to appreciate the creature comforts that comes with that, you could end up, trapped in that very life that you created. Being a lawyer afforded me many creature comforts, and the very thought of ‘downgrading’ sent shivers down my spine.
Having now mentored numerous people in the SFM, I’ve come to notice that there are 3 categories of people in that trap…
The first group in the allowing “your degree determine your career” trap are the under graduates and fresh graduates. Many of them had chosen careers based on romanticized youthful notions of what it means to be a lawyer or doctor. Others were made to choose early or channelled into certain choices by the school system.
The second group, are the people like me. People who had seen a certain amount of success, and perhaps are even reached the pinnacle of our industries and then thought to ourselves – “I’m still not happy, but now what?”
And the final group, and I was arguably in this camp for a long time as well, are the ones who have been doing the same thing all their lives and are just too comfortable to want to make a change, or who think to themselves, “I’m too old to make a change”.
67% of Americans surveyed are unhappy in their jobs and 15% actually hate their jobs…
But there is a way out. No matter how old you are, or how “IT challenged” you think you are, I have seen people who were that way, and have made the education they received at the Six Figure Mentors, work for them. That’s the power of putting mindset mentoring, and technical training together. All I knew for 20 years was lawyer-ing. And now marketing and technical terms roll off my tongue. And the best thing is, I have the time and financial freedom to do the things that I truly love.
Start pursuing your passions and doing the things you truly love today. It’s never too late.
