Reskill and Retool By October 2020
The need to reskill and retool for the future has a firm date for some here in Singapore, with driverless busses starting in October 2020
In the news in Singapore today (11 April 2017) – we have a firm date for when our bus services will go driverless – October 2020, and the first prototypes will start running in the tourism island, Sentosa, from 2018! The need to reskill and retool has been given a firm date.
Do not let fear stop you from reskilling and retooling
There are many skeptics that think that a lot of this, driverless busses, robots stealing human jobs and the like, is nothing more than fear mongering.
However, I would contend that a lot of that reaction comes from fear and denial. I would be the first to admit that a year ago, I would have been fearful of this reality. In fact, on hindsight I wasn’t fearful, I was terrified – but I probably didn’t even know it then!
I had been a corporate lawyer for 20 years. And that’s all I knew how to do. In the back of my mind, I calculated on a regular basis, how many years I would have till retirement, how I would save up for the years past retirement, assuming all my debts were paid by then.
And it was worrying because all that was predicated on my continuing to have a job.
Corporate lawyers earn fees based on time spent on work – work which involves knowledge sharing and interpretation based on the laws – all things which could potentially be done better and cheaper by computers.
In fact, the legal research tools that were lauded for making our lives so much easier, would be the very tools that will eventually make it possible for the business person to access the information for themselves.
Reskill and retool for the evolution of jobs
Many optimists contend that jobs will not disappear, but they will evolve. That being the case, the need to reskill and retool for the future becomes of paramount importance if one were to stay relevant to the opportunities available.
I started to reskill and retool, one thing at a time, and I’m glad I did. With my new skills I got job offers that paid higher than when my last lawyer’s job paid! However, with these new skills I no longer need to, or want to have a job…
Reskill and retool painlessly
I started by learning one simple skill, something that didn’t need me to go back to school, and allowed me to learn and earn from home – how to sell something online.
I figured that if I could learn to sell one thing online, I could learn to sell anything. And if I knew what I could sell online, I would know what sells and what doesn’t and from there knew what opportunities there are online.
What they say about the internet is true. It is full of opportunity, and but you need to learn the skills to identify those opportunities and take advantage of them.
Once you understand that you too can have multiple online income streams.
