Changing your life won’t feel right
If we want a different life, we need to do things differently. Doing things differently won’t feel right. Learn how you can create the life that you love.
One of the most common comments I get from new students is this – “I feel so overwhelmed…”
And that’s completely natural, since you’re learning to do something you’ve never learnt to do before.
It’s a little like me being in the first year of law school, thinking to myself, “I’ll never be a lawyer because it’s so overwhelming…”
But that sense of overwhelm goes even deeper than that, beyond needing to learn skills.
That’s because when we’re at the start of a journey like that, we are essentially starting to re-write our person stories, and to do that, we are changing aspects of our personalities, in particular those portions which relate to our false beliefs.
Now, to clarify, I’m not suggesting that anyone changes their values – beliefs strongly rooted in them – such as honesty, integrity, family, freedom, etc. In fact, we believe that your values form the foundation of any business that you start.
What I mean is, changing false beliefs such as…
“I can only be good at my current job, which I’m not even that good at, since my manager came down on me hard yesterday, but I need to keep doing this because I’m too old to learn anything new, and even if I wasn’t, I’m not that smart, or hardworking, etc…”
Most of us grew up thinking that.
We grew up in an era of industrialization, which needed people to think that way to support the captains of industry.
When I first started, a mentor shared with me, “To change your future, you have to change you.”
I was comfortable with my life. It felt right.
However, what “felt right” to me then will only have brought me more of the same.
I could not trust what “felt right”, because that would have kept me on that same golden hamster wheel for life.
Us humans need something to hold on to, and if I couldn’t hold on to what felt right, I felt lost. And so I learnt to hold on to my vision for what I wanted to be, and to follow the training that I had paid to receive.
I learnt to do things that felt alien to me, like blogging, video and email marketing.
The hardest thing for me to do, was to shed 20 years of “wearing corporate hats”, and learning to just be me.
Honest, open, authentic me.
Me with all my flaws, learning to see those flaws as gifts that made me unique.
It didn’t feel right – flaws are the ugliest parts of ourselves, right? But I learnt to see those flaws as something to be embraced, that I could share, and benefit someone who was going through the same.
Holding on to my vision of what future I wanted, and trusting the training, allowed me to do that, despite the fact that it didn’t “feel right”.
That allowed me to grow, in a way that doing what “felt right” wouldn’t have.
And because financial rewards are just the by-products of our growth, this growth allowed me to replace my lawyers’ paycheck in 6 months.
Follow your dreams, your vision of your future. That is the path of growth. It will not “feel right”. That’s why we have growing pains.
Learn to trust that vision. Get good mentors and training, because you will face confusion and overwhelm, when you start to make big changes, and learn new things.
Always remember this. It is only when you grow into the person that you are meant to be, that you can live the life you are meant to live.
Are you prepared to confront what “feels right”?
