I almost got scammed (again)

Online scams are rife. One needs to take precautions when dealing online, in particular with “business opportunities” that guarantee results. Learn more.

I almost got scammed again.

Which isn’t surprising given that Statista, a provider of statistics, estimates that $100 billion has been lost to fraud online.

This time, a friend called me out of the blue, and started telling me about this “awesome business opportunity”.

Running a successful home business, has given me a fair bit of time to look into other new opportunities, and so I entertained this for a bit, but eventually had to tell him “no” because there were just too many red flags.

Imagine having to send funds to an account in Barbados to hold assets in Singapore, when I’m right here… What will they think of next?

When I first started my online business, and was looking for courses, I got scammed a couple of times too.

The first course I bought was SFM, a genuine online business course.  Because the first was genuine, I let my guard down, as I figured others must be too.

Foolish, to say the least.

Because of these experiences, one of the values in my online business, is that I only promote what I actually use, and get benefit from.

It’s so easy to hide behind the anonymity of the internet and promote whatever you want.  And many people do.

In fact, at a recent event for online marketers, I met a terribly overweight online marketer who markets weight loss products that will get you six pack abs.

One of the reasons I promote SFM, is that this was the product that enabled me to quit my 20 year legal career within 6 months of starting. 

Neither SFM nor myself can guarantee these results, as this is a genuine business, and with any genuine business, there are risks.

However, having gotten those results for myself, I know for a fact that this works.  And I can therefore promote it with confidence.

Also, if I know it works, then by promoting those products, I’m actually helping people who are looking for such products, get something that I know works.

The other benefit of promoting only what I use, is that allows me to timely pivot away from products that are becoming irrelevant.  

If I used to use it, or no longer use it because the technology has become irrelevant, then I stop promoting it, and move on to promoting what I replaced it with.

So be on alert to online scams, and don’t believe everything you read online.

If in doubt, reach out to the promoter and ask the questions you need to ask.

At the same time, don’t be afraid to do something that you want to online because of the prevalence of online scams.

Do your due diligence.  Importantly, sieve out the real from the fake reviews, since a common tactic is to place a fake bad review of a genuine product, in order to get traffic to the scam.

And contact the promoters – often the scammy ones won’t even reply to you.
