Should you quit your job?

Today is the 3rd Anniversary of me having quit my job. It’s a deciison I don’t regret. But should you quit your job to work from home too? Read on.

18th April, 3 years ago I quit my job.

It was exactly 2 months and 3 days after I first signed up for the SFM.

At that point, I hadn’t yet replaced my income, for that matter, I hadn’t yet made a single sale online.

But I trusted what I had seen.  I had followed the process, taken the steps I needed to take, and I started to see the wheels go into motion.

A lot of people had asked me why I took such a drastic step.  After all, I had a 20 year career in corporate law that paid me well, we had just purchased a new home, and taken on a new mortgage, and in short, I had a lot to lose.

My big “why” was wanting to spend more time with the people I love and doing the things that were important to me.

But to take that step of quitting my job…

Well, for me, it’s a little like getting onto a plane.  If you trust the airline, you know you’ll land safely way before you’ve landed.

And I trusted my mentors.

But this is not where the story ends.

In fact, after quitting my job, and the realization that I had fired a fairly large paycheck sank in, I went into a state of panic.  I started to make a lot of choices that weren’t right for me or my business.  I started to cling to things that I understood, like trying to sell physical goods as an affiliate, and making really small margins.

I started worrying if that plane was really that safe after all.

I signed up for a bunch of different courses to learn to run different businesses online.  None of them bore any fruit, not so much because they weren’t good courses (well, some were, some weren’t and some were just scams…), but because I was completely unfocussed.

I was in that spiral for 2 months, when one of my mentors had a firmly worded, heart to heart chat with me.  It wasn’t what I wanted to hear, but it was what I needed to hear.

I fully refocused my efforts on affiliate marketing products with higher margins and recurring income elements.

Within 2 months of refocusing, I replaced my income.  That’s 6 months from the day I first signed up.

Let me stress this.

You do NOT need to quit your job to start an online business.

In fact, there are advantages to starting part time, like having cashflow 🙂

Now, if you’re thinking of quitting your job to run an online business full time, do bear in mind that it requires you to focus and commit to one direction.  Only in that way will your business start to bear fruit.

If you’re like me and you tend to get jittery, you’ll need to make that extra effort to focus, and to stay in touch with your mentors, and to trust them.  What they might need to tell  you, likely won’t be what you want to hear, but what you need to.

Finally, do also be sure that you’re going to work on a business model that will support the level of income that you require before you can leave your job.
